August Arts, Watercolors and the Carnegie

Saturday, August 15 was watercolor day at the Carnegie. About forty people of all ages painted diligently thanks to the expert advice from local artist Cheryl French and the abundant materials supplied by the Albany Public Library Foundation.
The session’s focus was on landscape with a brief introductory discussion of choosing the horizon line, creating depth through size and color variations, creating and using shadows and using pencils and oil pastels to enhance the work.
There was an abundance of tools and materials available on the seven tables prepared for the session and there was a horde of pictures to help spur the imaginations.
“Diligently” is actually an understatement for everyone painted with extreme care and dedication. The consequences ranged from the total abstract (the little girl’s first abstract painting she proudly declared) to remarkably realistic details. All the artists were united in enjoying the experience.
Next up at the Carnegie (10:30 am, Saturday, September 19) is the ancient art of leaf printing. The participants ink a leaf or leaves and ink a plate on which to place the inked leaf (face up). A piece of paper is carefully placed on top of the creation and it is all put through the roller press. The results are always a stunning surprise – fit to be framed.
