Joyful Noise at the Carnegie

By John Byrne –
The Carnegie Branch of the Albany Public Library lacked its library hush on Saturday, August 2 as dozens of kids and adults tried out guitars, violins, basses, cellos, dulcimers, small drums, electric keyboards and more.
The event was a Musical Instrument Petting Zoo organized and presented by the Albany Public Library Foundation with the help of the Albany Youth Orchestra and library staff. It was the first in a series of four free art events for all ages August Arts being presented at the Carnegie Branch by the Foundation. (See flyer below.)
The next two events watercolor on August 9 and creating small sculpture August 16. These events are from 11 am to 12:30 pm. All the necessary materials will be provided and these events should be quieter. The fourth event on August 23 will feature a short performance by the Albany Youth Orchestra followed by hands-on opportunities to try the instruments. All of the events are scheduled to coincide with the Saturday market two blocks from the Carnegie Branch.
Well over a dozen kinds of instruments were available to the participants at the Musical Instrument Petting Zoo and all were in almost constant use. There were plenty of adult volunteers to explain the rudiments of the instruments while encouraging hands-on exploration.
There was noise for sure but it was a joyful noise and everybody had a good time.
